WE’VE HIT THE GROUND RUNNING!

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

Every year September brings excitement of a fresh start and the anticipation of the years many events. This year the Art Department has something particularly special to look forward to with the 2011-2012 New York Arts Trip. In late April, 40 students from all of the arts disciplines will come together in one large group and descend upon the Big Apple. With our first information meeting in early October the students are geared up and ready to go! We will be sure to post pictures and lots of details upon our return on the arts website, so be sure to check it out on the arts website fmmarts.blogspot.com

PHOTOGRAPHY AT FMM

Our Photography program has continued with the tradition of extended day field trips. On Wednesday October 26, the grade 11 students spent the day at the Toronto Brick Works, Allan Gardens and The Distillery District. We stopped in Dundas Square for lunch and then headed to our final destination; The Art Gallery of Ontario to view the photographic exhibition Songs of the Future: Canadian Industrial Photographs, 1858 to Today. The exhibition is free with your general admission and is on until April 2012 if you’re interested.

On November 3^rd the grade 12 photo students will spend the morning in Caledon Ontario photographing the red clay of the Caledon Badlands, after which they will spend time in the Cherry Beach area and then move on the Distillery and the AGO. We are also hoping to fit in some evening city photography, to catch the city lights at night. The students are eager to find out what their cameras can do!

MURAL COMMITTEE

The FMM mural committee continues to run strong with 40 members on the team. This year's focus will be the new faith pillars in the school lobby, the media, history and math murals on the third floor, the new entrance to the physical education centre and to finish off our remaining canvases of the schools clubs and committees.

Welcom to Music at FMM

Grade 9 Instrumental Music AWU1O1

The grade 9 Music Program offers students the opportunity to learn a wind or percussion instrument with absolutely no previous musical training. The new musician will choose the flute, oboe, clarinet, alto or tenor saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, bells, drums or percussion.

Performance is an important part of this course. Besides the Annual Christmas and Spring Concerts, the Junior Concert Band will perform at the Ontario Band Association’s Musicfest, York Region’s Music Alive and the student’s favourite Wonderland Music Festival.

This group rehearses once a week commencing at the end of October to prepare for the YCDSB Annual Super Saturday in November, a gathering of grade 9’s from all High Schools in the Board. Perhaps the most fun for the grade 9’s is the Annual Art’s Banquet and trip to the Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls during the first weekend in June.

In addition to the practical performances, students will learn music theory, music history, ear training and composition. They will also learn to improve their focus and concentration skills through performance.

Each student will pay $80.00 per year to rent an instrument for their use only, from September until the end of the school year.

Grade 9 Advanced Instrumental Music

The grade 9 Advanced Music Program is only for students who have previous experience on a wind or percussion instrument. This does not include piano.

The student will eventually be joined by the grade 9 beginners in the Junior Band however, if the Advanced musician displays good musicianship, they will also be able to join the grade 10’s in the Intermediate Concert Band.

They follow an enriched grade 9 program and join the Intermediate Concert Band in their activities.

Grade 10 Instrumental Music AMU2O1 (grade 9 music is a recommended prerequisite or appointment with Music Teacher)

In grade 10 the musicians have the opportunity to improve their musical skills on their instruments. This is a transition year from beginner musician to more advanced Senior Music Ensemble.

Ear training, chorales, etudes, studies and scales become an important part of their daily routine.

Public performances and Music Festivals are important for the accelerated development of our music students at Father McGivney (as in grade 9). Some Intermediate Band members will be invited to be a part of the Concert Winds and travel with them.

Students will increase their time on theory, composition and music history.

Grade 11 Instrumental Music AMU3M1 (Grade 10 music is a prerequisite or audition)

In grade 11 the music students becomes refined musicians and ambassadors for the school. They perform Christmas Concerts at all five of our feeder Elementary Schools, participate in all of our McGivney Liturgies, Remembrance Day, Black History Assembly and many more. The Concert Winds also participate in all of the Festivals (except Wonderland) and also compete in Kiwanis.

As the musicians become more sophisticated and creative so does their instruction. Emphasis is on Chamber music, theory, composition and music history.

The Band plans yearly trips in Canada, the U.S. and abroad.

Grade 12 Instrumental Music AMU4M1 (Grade 11 music is a prerequisite or audition)

In grade 12 the musicians become leaders in the Concert Winds and Music Program. The senior students lead sectionals and inspire the younger musicians to achieve their best.

The students are prepared for post-secondary music programs and continue with Chamber music, chorales, etudes, studies and scales. Ear training, theory, history and composition are developed in more detail

At Graduation in June the grade 12's perform a class composition for their fellow graduating students.

Over the years, the Concert Winds have traveled over the world: out of North America they have visited Italy, Jamaica and Cuba; in the USA: Boston, New York City, Dallas, Orlando, Washington and in Canada Quebec City, Montreal, Niagara Falls and Downtown Toronto.

Gr. 9 Drama (ADA 101)

Our grade 9 drama class is a great opportunity for students to develop both their interpersonal and problem solving skills, while discovering their dramatic side! Units of study include: tableau, mime, mask, voice, historical/ world drama, improvisation, scene study and character work. Students are required to attend a professional production in the city of Toronto.

Gr. 10 Drama (ADA 201)
Note: Grade 9 drama is not a pre-requisite, but it is preferred

Grade 10 drama allows students to build upon their dramatic skills from grade 9, and apply their leadership and teamwork capabilities to not only mime and tableau scenes, but more in depth scene work and character study. In addition, students create, write and perform a puppetry play. Students are required to attend a professional production in the city of Toronto.

Gr. 11 Drama (ADA 3M1)
Note: Grade 9 or 10 drama is a pre-requisite, but both are preferred

This course allows students to apply the skills they’ve learned in both gr. 9 and 10 to dynamic activities, such as: playwriting, one-act performances, directing, design elements (such as set, lighting, costume, sound design…), acting theories… Previous gr. 11 classes have been involved in the Sears Drama Festival, a Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre show, outreach programs for the school board as well as grade 9 and 10 classes. Students are required to attend a professional production in the city of Toronto.

Gr. 12 Drama (ADA 4M1)
Note: Gr. 11 Drama is a pre-requisite

The focus of this course is the culminating main stage production for our school. To get to this point, students develop collective collaboration pieces, hone their technical skills, learn how to direct, stage-manage, design, organize, and put together a show. Students are required to attend a professional production in the city of Toronto.

NEW: There is an option to enroll in the “Arts- Intensive” gr. 12 drama course (ADA 4M1 & ADP 4M1) , which would run for 2 full periods and count as 2 university credits. Please see Guidance to find out if it is offered during your current school year.

Welcome to Visual Arts at FMM

Recognizing the extremely high level of culture and creativity in our community, FMM Arts is committed to providing the highest standard of arts education. The core of all visual arts courses is the creative process, where students develop skills intrinsic to divergent and exceptional thinking. Everyone has the ability to be creative when provided with opportunities to learn and practice technical skills and creative thinking. Students explore a wide variety of art forms including digital media, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, design, photography and fashion, with ample opportunity for independent work.

FMM Arts honours the rich diversity of our community. Students learn from classical and contemporary masters from around the world. The continuing artistic heritage of First Nations people in Canada forms a core component in our study of arts and culture.

Intensive portfolio development helps students prepare for entrance into university, college and apprenticeship programs in the creative industries. Grade 9 Visual Arts – AVI1O1

The grade nine program offers students an opportunity to begin an in depth exploration of the Arts. Students will work in four main media’s printmaking, sculpture, drawing and watercolour painting. The grade nine Art program draws influence from Pre-historic art, Egyptian Art, Canadian Art and Native art.

Grade 10 Visual Arts – AVI2O1 (there is no pre-requisite for this course, grade 9 is recommended for those wishing to pursue visual arts)

This program allows students to continue to build and develop their skills from the grade 9 program. Students will begin to further explore a variety of media extending on the grade nine art program, through the introduction of acrylic paint and ink. The grade ten program draws influence from, Japanese, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Early Christian and Romanesque art.

Grade 11 Visual Arts – AVI3M1 (grade 9 or 10 arts is a pre-requisite)

The grade eleven art program provides students with intensive study of techniques in drawing, painting, sculpture, digital design and printmaking, with a thematic focus determined by the students. Students will explore masters of art from a wide variety of cultures. This course is critical to portfolio preparation and highly recommended for students pursuing post-secondary options in creative industries.

Grade 12 Visual Arts- AVI4M1 (grade 11 art is a pre-requisite)

The grade twelve art program offers students the opportunity to independently explore the arts. Students will develop a thesis project where they will select the media of their choice as well as their subject matter. The grade twelve program draws influence from contemporary artists from around the world, using a wide variety of critical frameworks including the post-modern and post-colonial. Students are supported in the development of a strong portfolio which is essential for university/college/apprenticeship admissions.

NEW: AWU4M1 There is an option to enroll in the “Arts- Intensive” gr. 12 Visual Art course, which would run for 2 full periods and count as 2 university credits. Please see Guidance to find out if it is offered during your current school year.

Grade 11 Photography AWQ3O1

The grade eleven photography program is based both on digital and silver printing. Students will have an opportunity to work with both digital cameras and film cameras. They will learn traditional darkroom techniques as well as a variety of digital programs such as; Adobe Photoshop, In Design and Illustrator. Students must have their own point and shoot digital camera for this program. Film SLR’s will be provided to students for specific projects. The grade eleven program draws influence from photography from the 1900’s to late 1960’s and considers photography as social document and a force for change.

Grade 12 Photography AWQ4M1 (Grade 11 Photography is a pre-requisite for this program)

The grade 12 photography programs focuses on building students skills from the grade 11 program. Students will continue to have an opportunity to work with both digital and traditional printing methods. Students knowledge will be extended through additional programs and techniques learnt in the ‘digital darkroom’ and in silver printing. Students will explore an extensive final thesis, where their subject and theme is student driven.

The grade twelve program draws influence from portraiture, documentary and straight photography, looking at artists from a wide variety of cultures from the 1960’s to present day. Students are supported in the development of a strong portfolio for university/college/apprenticeship applications.

Grade 11 Fashion Design AWI3M1 (Grade 9 or 10 art is a pre-requisite for this program)

The Fashion Design course introduces students to the initial level of learning in the creative world of Fashion. Emphasis is placed upon the acquisition of fashion illustration, basic Pattern-making and garment construction techniques, hand and machine-sewing skills and the creation of fashion accessories and simple garments. Critical thinking skills are at the core of the learning as students analyze the intrinsic interrelation between art and fashion. They are encouraged to explore the evolution of styles since early civilizations until today, understand the relationship between fashion and society, and examine the work of well-known designers from around the world. Fads, trends, style and radical design are dutifully explored.

Grade 12 Fashion Design AWI4M1 (Grade 11 Fashion is the pre-requisite for this program)

Grade 12 AWI-4M1 Fashion Design Course builds on the sewing skills and knowledge introduced to the senior art students in AWI-3M1. The purpose of this course is to improve and refine the knowledge about the world of Fashion Design through classroom theory/research, lecture, projects, fieldtrips and individual/team work.

Students will continue to be encouraged to develop their creative problem solving skills. In the grade twelve program students will continue to focus on garment construction and will be introduced to the technique of draping. After exploring different cultural fashion expressions and the work of current designers from around the world, they they will create and construct a garment inspired by the designer of their choice, one culturally specific garment and two of their own creation with emphasis in radical design. Students will also apply their knowledge and technical skills in the making of Fashion accessories that suit their garments.

NOTE: Graduates or current students from postsecondary fashion programs are invited to present to both the grade 11 and 12 classes to share their first-hand experiences and to help students in preparation for a successful entrance in the world of fashion.

All garments and fashion accessories created in the grade 11 and 12 fashion program are modeled during Arts Nights annual Fashion Show.

Grade 11 Art & Design AWD3M1 (Grade 9 or 10 art is a pre-requisite for the program)

This course introduces the senior art student to the world of Applied Design. Students will learn how to create, design and render 2D graphic work within four fields:

1. Graphic Design (advertising, illustration, commercial logos and typography).
2. Architectural Design (drafting, drawing and rendering concepts, perspective systems and techniques).
3. Industrial design (furniture, house-ware, decoration, artifacts, etc.)
4. Fashion design (model rendering and illustration for the fashion industry). Students will create a fashion accessory and depict it through a 2D and a 3D rendition.

To ensure success in the implementation of the entire design process students will be supported in developing creative “visualization”, “conceptualization” and “rendering” skills. Design theory and design history will be an ongoing component of the entire program. To authenticate teamwork efforts in the applied design practice most of the projects will be explored and carried out through a team approach.

Grade 12 Art & Design AWD4M1 (Grade 11 Applied Design is the pre-requisite for this program)

Grade 12 Applied Design course builds on skills and knowledge introduced to the senior art student in AWD-3M1. The purpose of this course is to refine the individual students education about the world of design and improve their skills in “creating art for the industry and real world”. Students will continue to apply the process of product creation within the following fields: Industrial, Graphic, Architectural and Fashion Design. Within Architectural design, also the area of Interior design will be explored supporting students to develop a clear understanding of its identity and significance, and enabling them to work on colour, textures and layout compositions, and interior design drawings.

Note: Graduates or current students, from postsecondary Architecture, Interior, Fashion, Graphic and Industrial design programs (i.e. from Ryerson University, Sheridan and George Brown College, OCAD) are invited to present to both the grade 11 and 12 classes by bringing in, and facilitating a discussion, about their first hand experiences and learning in their preparation for a successful entrance in the world of design.

Grade 11 Media Arts ASM3O1

The grade 11 Media Arts course enables students to create media art works using available and emerging technologies such as computer animation, digital imaging, and video, and a variety of media. Students will have an opportunity to work with Adobe Illustration, Photoshop, Premiere and Movie Maker.

All Visual Art students will attend an educational field trip, locations vary depending on exhibitions and time of year.

Mural Committee

For the past three years students in the Mural Committee have been working to bring to life the halls in McGivney. They have collectively been working on two projects; the wall murals and school canvases.

The wall murals are images that represent McGivney’s faith and school programs.

They have created four murals outside of the Chapel on the second and third floor (two on each floor). The students have also completed the entrance to the Drama room and the faith statement in our lobby. Currently they are working on designs for the History hallway, Media Arts lab, the school lobby, gymnasium and student services.

A special thanks to Parent Council for helping to support this project.

The canvases are 16x20 designs created by the committee to represent the schools clubs, committees and sports teams. You can find the completed canvases in the hall of

recognition.

Drama Club/Council

The drama council offers students an opportunity to be involved in organizing special events for the Drama department such as; productions, improv. Club, and other special events. The drama council meets approximately once a week or as needed. All drama enthusiasts are welcome to be members of drama council.

Improv. Team

The McGivney Improv. Team gives students who are skilled in the area of improvisation an opportunity to showcase their skills in a unbelievably fun and competitive manner. The team trains for the first half of the school year and then competes in February at the regional level against schools from all over the GTA. Not only does our improv team participate in competitions, but they can also be found entertaining our school during select events.

Sears Drama Festival

The Ontario Sears Drama Festival is a prestigious, competitive festival that takes place every year throughout Ontario. It is a chance to showcase the talent of high school students through their acting, directing, designing, and writing abilities. Every year, McGivney students produce a show for the Festival, and we even host at the District level.

Fashion Club

The FMM Fashion club was born and established out of the enthusiasm that our students have for fashion. The purpose is to provide a safe, educational and fashion centered space where student can refine their skills in fashion design. Students learn to make garments, create fashionable accessories and apply screen-printing techniques. Their final designs are modeled during Arts Nights annual Fashion Show.

The Fashion club meets every Wednesday after school. Students can join the fashion club if they are enrolled in either the grade 11 or 12 Fashion Design course.

ACES

ACES “Art Council for Enthusiastic Students” is the Arts Committee at Father Michael McGivney and offers students a place where they can go to enjoy the visual arts.

ACES strives to allow the students at Father Michael McGivney to explore their creativity by providing them with an artistic outlet. The students can experience and take part in the different styles of art, while at the same time getting involved with the larger school community. We believe that through this club students will be able to grow to appreciate not just art, but life."

Music Council

The Music Council is a group of leaders within the music community who organize events, act as a bridge between music students and music teachers, and take care of the little details which keep the music program running. A few events the music program helps to organize are: The 5km run, The Spring Concert, Arts Banquet, and the refreshment/ bake sale stands outside major music events. Positions like stage crew (People who set up the stage) and librarian (Making sure the band has the music it needs) which are crucial to the organization of the music program are filled by the music council when there aren’t enough volunteers.

The Music Council did a wonderful job putting together this years Arts Banquet at Crystal Fountain. The students dressed to the nines and kept the dance floor moving all night! A wonderful evening had by all!

GRADE 12 DRAMA

Our grade 12 Drama Intensive students were asked by The Second City to help create a commercial to advertise their student programs. The video can be seen on youtube or by visiting the Second City website. http://www.secondcity.com/

Some of our grade 12 Drama students ventured to Theatrebooks in downtown Toronto to hear readings from acclaimed Canadian playwright, Morris Panych. Our students enjoyed listening to and sharing ideas with such a world renowned artist. http://www.theatrebooks.com/

Grade 11 Photo Trip

This year 60 grade 11 photo students took on down town Toronto. We started bright and early departing FMM at 8am with our first destination the Evergreen Brick Works.

“Evergreen Brick Works is a community environmental centre that inspires and equips visitors to live, work and play more sustainably. Evergreen, a national charity, has transformed the former Don Valley Brick Works from a collection of deteriorating heritage buildings into an international showcase for urban sustainability and green design that is open year-round.” http://ebw.evergreen.ca/

After the Brick Works we headed to the historical distillery district near the lakeshore, where students had an opportunity to view local artists work, sample fresh baked goods and photograph their urban landscapes for their photography assignments. http://www.thedistillerydistrict.com/

The students wasted no time and quickly moved on to their third destination Allan Gardens, a local green house in Toronto. http://torontobotanicalgarden.ca/tours/allangardens.htm In the green house students were able to create still life images of plant life as well as photograph environmental portraits in a tropical setting.

After stopping for lunch we walked over to the Art Gallery of Toronto where students were able to view original photographs from the early 1900’s when photography was first invented. http://www.ago.net/

We had a packed day and rounding on six o’clock the students were ready for a nap!

GRADE 12 PHOTO TRIP
This year the grade 12 students went to Caledon Ontario to photograph the red clay of the badlands. Students hiked through the natural landscape shooting as they went. They were quick to apply all photographic techniques they had learnt in both grade 11 and 12. http://www.divingmyway.com/badlands.html

Following the Badlands the grade 12’s went to Cherry Beach to photograph the shoreline, the Toronto Skyline… and take quick break after the hike. Then we were off to lunch and the AGO!

Grade 9 Music Trip: Niagara Falls

Following the Arts Banquet the grade nine Music students traveled to Niagara Falls for a weekend of fun and relaxation.

We left the school at 10:30 am to arrive at Great Wolf Lodge for noon, where the students quickly headed to the water park to splash around.

At 4:30 we left for mass at St. Patrick’s church, where we were welcomed by the congregation. Several members even stayed after the mass to tell us what a wonderful group of students we have! We were able to take a group photograph just outside the doors to the church with father before moving on to dinner.

Saturday night we went to the dinner theatre where we enjoyed a wonderful buffet dinner and live magic show! We watched a helicopter appear out of thin air, a woman turn into a tiger, and scarves turn into tropical birds. (sorry, no pictures allowed)

Bright and early the next morning we met for breakfast at the lodge buffet, followed with a second visit to the water park or games and attractions at the arcade.

By 11:00 we were checked out of our rooms and on our way to the Maid of the Mist. We got some great shots and were up close and personal with the falls.

After the boat tour we went to Niagara gardens, the Hersey’s factory, had lunch at a local restaurant and for those of us willing to take the scare, to the Niagara haunted house…Nightmares…and was it ever scary!

The bus ride home found most of the students sound a sleep…

Rachel told us she can never sleep on the bus…all evidence to the contrary.

Arts Banquet

At the end of each year the art students come together to celebrate a year of hard work and dedication. Awards are handout to students and the executive teams for the arts councils are revealed. Students are presented with a final slide show put together by the Music Council, a delicious dinner, gag awards and a night filled with dancing.

Grade 12 Drama Production
The tech team is hard at work building our new stage for the Grade 12 drama production, Twelve Angry Jurors.

Make sure you don’t miss the show…tickets are on sale in the cafeteria during lunches A and C.

Grade 12 Photography

On Thursday May 20th the grade 12 photography class went on their field trip to Caledon and Toronto. We first travelled to Caledon to photograph the Badlands and lush green space. Blue skies with temperatures of almost 30 degrees created a perfect setting for our photographers. Following our visit at the Badlands we moved in to Toronto with a stop at Cheery Beach to photograph the beaches and sail boats. We then moved in to the core of the city for lunch in Dundas Square. Followed with a beautiful walk over to the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario) to view the photography and contemporary art collects.

We had a fantastic day!

Grade 11 Photography Trip

On May 10th students participated in an educational trip to Toronto visiting different exhibitions of the Toronto Photography Festival: Japan Foundation, Consulate of Portugal, University of Toronto-New College and Cobalt Gallery. In the afternoon students went to the Distillery District where they had the opportunity to shoot (with film and digital cameras) a variety of pictures exploring architectural, single and group portrait themes. Students not only had the opportunity to apply compositional techniques learnt in class, but were able to experiment with images of their own design and interest.

Grade 11 Applied Design: Toronto Trip

On April 27 the Applied Design class participated in an educational trip to Toronto. Students enjoyed a guided tour on the new structure of the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), where they were able to observe and learn about the well known architect Frank Gehry. Student then went on a guided tour at the Design Exchange where they viewed the industrial design work from the exhibition “From Mediterranean Traditional to Israeli Contemporary Design. Later the students explored the permanent collection and resources at the Design Exchange. Their final visit was to the Durham College exhibit of Graphic Design at the Urbanspace Gallery in Toronto.

During the month of May the following alumni presentations took place:

3. Alexandra Baluyot, graduate from Complections International Academy, Special Effects master program (Larissa Wood and Enoch Wong also shared their experiences as Interior Design and Special Effects’ students)
4. Nicco Miranda, St Robert Catholic School graduate, (currently attending the York Sheridan program) presented on Illustration Design

Spring Concert

On Monday April 26th, FMM Music Council celebrated the 18th Annual Spring Concert at Markham Theatre.

Performances included: The Concert Winds, Intermediate Band, Jazz Ensemble, Steel Pan band, Junior Band and special performances by staff and family members.

Arts Night

On Thursday April 15, 2010 the students at Father Michael McGivney put on their annual Arts night. The evening featured a live DJ from Majur Productions, Visual Art displays from fashion, photography and Art, drama monologues, musical performances and a fashion show!

The even was a huge success and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year.

GRADE 9 ART TRIP
On April 13, the Grade 9 students went on their first trip to the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). The students were invited to explore the Ancient Egyptian artefacts in the King Tut exhibition, as well as participate in group activities in the Canadian, Native and Contemporary Art exhibitions. Through out the gallery students were able to examine works that they have been studying in class allowing them to experience first hand the colour, form and texture of the works created by some of the worlds most famous artists.

Grade 11/12: Fashion Desing Field Trip

On April 7, 2010 the Fashion Design Grade 11 and 12 students had a guided tour at the George Brown College School of Fashion visiting the classrooms, fashion facilities and boutiques managed by students. Student took part in an informative session on the various Fashion studies offered by the college, application process, prerequisites, and other information of interest for those wishing to pursue fashion design. The group then went on to visit Casa Loma: historical site and later attended to the Ryerson University’s Mass Exodus Fashion Show presented by the 4th Year School of Fashion and Fashion Communication students.

News from the Art Department

This past January the Grade 12 Fashion, Photography and Visual Art students put on an outstanding art exhibition. The entire lobby of Father McGivney was creatively decorated with over 100 pieces of student art work. A live DJ (Majur Productions) welcomed the McGivney community, while artists and faculty wove their way through the crowds. The entire evening was a huge success and we are excited to see the turn out next year, as the Grade 12 show will become an annual event at McGivney.

This April we look forward to our Arts Week and especially to our Arts evening on Thursday
April 15. The doors will open at 7:00 to the Visual Arts exhibition, followed by the music and drama performances and ending with our yearly fashion show.
